We have a very exciting opportunity for two Apprentice Keepers to join our Zoo Animal Management (ZAM) team and acquire specialist on the job training. These vacancies are only open to those aged 18 and over due to provisions under the Young People at Work regulations.
The apprentice keeper will work to a high standard under the direction of the senior ZAM staff. The ZAM department care for the main collection of animals at the zoo and the successful candidates will assist in caring for a variety of domestic and exotic species whilst also providing support for the rest of their respective team where required.
No prior zoo or animal husbandry experience for the post of apprentice is required as full in house training will be given, although candidates will be expected to demonstrate a keen interest in zoo animal husbandry. The successful candidates will also be expected to achieve an NVQ Level 2 in animal care during the course of their apprenticeship which is expected to last between 12-14 months. Please note there is no progression route to level 3 due to the job role and responsibilities and that applicants with level 2, 3 or degree level animal care qualifications are not eligible to apply due to the current funding restrictions.
Hours: Average 40 hours a week
Salary £3.50 per hour – rising to minimum wage after first year depending upon age

Purchase Ledger Assistant
We are looking for an experienced Purchase Ledger Assistant to join our small, friendly accounts team based at Banham Zoo.
The successful candidate will take responsibility for the Purchase Ledgers across four companies, preparing monthly payment runs and assisting with month end procedures. The role will involve inputting a high volume of invoices, reconciliation of statements and accounts, making payments and any other general accounting duties as necessary. You will also be required to deal with suppliers over the phone and resolve any queries they have in a professional manner.
The successful candidate will be able to communicate effectively with colleagues at all levels, pay attention to detail and be a team player with a “can-do” attitude. You will need to be organised, with first class accuracy and numeracy skills. Training on our complex systems will be given but experience of Excel spreadsheets is essential.
This is a permanent role which offers 20 hours per week, although an ability to be flexible and offer additional hours at busy periods would be advantageous. The salary offered will be dependent on skills and experience.
