Black-footed Penguin

Spheniscus demersus

There are 18 species of penguins ranging in size from the little blue penguin (40cm tall) to the Emperor penguin (110 cm tall). Black-footed penguins measure about 50cm (20 inches) tall.

Size: 50cm
Weight: 2 - 4kg

All penguins are found in the southern hemisphere. Black-footed, or African penguins live around the coast of South Africa.

The black-footed penguin mainly feeds on pilchards as well as anchovies, squid and crustaceans. They are sometimes seen 20 miles out to sea.

Black-footed penguins usually nest in burrows dug in sand. They lay 1 to 2 eggs, which are incubated for 40 days by both parents.

The black-footed penguin is endangered due to food shortages through overfishing, pollution, habitat loss and egg collection. All their nesting sites are now protected in the wild and there is also a reintroduction programme underway in South Africa. Our penguins are part of a European Breeding Programme for the species.
