The common genet is related to the civet and mongoose. They tend to be solitary animals and can make many different calls.

These animals prefer wooded areas and are often found near rivers and streams. They can also be found in habitats close to human habitats.

Common genets are carnivorous (meat-eaters) animals and eat mainly small mammals and birds. However they will also eat insects and fruit.

The common genet has a pregnancy of 10 to 11 weeks and after this time between 1 and 4 young are born.

The population of the common genet is currently stable. However, in some areas body parts are used for medicinal purposes and they are losing habitat in Ibiza. The common genet is protected by law in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.
