Peregrine Falcon

Falco peregrinus

The peregrine falcon is the fastest living bird. They can dive at speeds estimated at 320 km/h (200 mph).

Size: 34-50cm, Wingspan - 80-120cm
Weight: 0.5 - 1.5kg

The peregrine is the most widespread of the falcons, found on every continent. Their most common habitat is cliff faces, usually in open country.

Their prey is almost entirely birds which are usually captured in flight. Peregrines dive at tremendous speed towards their prey, catching it with their powerful hind claw.

The female lays 3 to 4 eggs on a bare cliff ledge, which are incubated by the female for around a month while the male brings her food.

Peregrine falcon are not classed as endangered although in Britain their numbers have dropped dramatically in the past due to hunting and the use of pesticides.
