The Poitou (pronounced Pwa-too) donkey is immediately distinguishable from other donkeys because of its great height, which is often more than 1.4 metres and because of its dark, shaggy coat.

Like horses, donkeys are grazers, although donkeys do need more fibre than horses for a good diet.

Conservation

Even though it is a domestic animal, the Poitou donkey is a rare breed. In 1977 a study and census was carried out and it revealed that only 44 pure bred Poitou could be found! In France “La SAUBAUD” association was set up to ‘Save the Poitou Donkey’ and their work continues.
