Suffolk Horse

Suffolk horses are a breed of horse standing around 15-16 hands (1.5 -1.6m) high. Their legs do not have long hairs, which helps the horse to cope with the heavy land of its home county.

Habitat

Also known as the Suffolk Punch, this distinctive breed originates from East Anglia, where it can be traced back to the 16th Century.

Diet

Like all horses, Suffolk horses are grazers. They possess a ‘caecum’; a special pouch in their digestive system that contains bacteria, which assist in digesting their fibrous diet.

Breeding

They are pregnant for around 11 months, and can breed from the time they are 3 years old.

Conservation

Although they are domestic animals, the Suffolk horse is considered ‘critical’ by the Rare Breed Survival Trust, with less than 300 breeding females registered. It was once commonly used for farming in East Anglia but has been replaced by heavy machinery.
