Taiwanese Sika Deer

Cervus nippon taiouanus

There are more than 10 subspecies of sika deer. The Taiwanese sika deer is also known as the Formosan sika deer.

habitat

Habitat

The sika deer is crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk) and will be found foraging in open grassy land in a small area of southern Taiwan.

Diet

The main diet of the sika deer is grass, however they will occasionally eat leaves and fruit.

Breeding

Female sika deer are pregnant for around 7 to 7 ½ months. In early summer 1 fawn is born, however they occasionally have twins.

Conservation

The species ‘sika deer’ is classed as least concern, however the Taiwanese sub-species was previously extinct in the wild, although a small number have now been reintroduced.
