DEXTER CATTLE

Dexter cattle

A domestic breed of cattle; it is a descendant of the predominately black cattle of the early Celts and has been recognised since the late 1700s. Dexter cattle were first introduced into England in 1882 and were first shown at the Royal Show in Norwich in 1886.
Dexter Cattle are herbivores and eat fresh/dry grasses. Mating takes place throughout the year and a single offspring is born after a gestation period of 277-290 days (approximately 9.5 months).
Dexters are the smallest British breed of cattle. They are bred in three colours, black, red and dun. The Dexters here at Banham Zoo are ‘red’.

PYGMY GOAT

Pygmy goat

There are many breeds of domesticated goat, spread throughout the world, mainly in the poorer underdeveloped countries. Pygmy goats originate from Africa. Goats are browsers and thrive in hilly, dry areas where other domestic livestock would be unable to find sufficient food. These animals are usually kept for the production of milk, but are also used for meat and leather.

The female goat, or nanny, gives birth to one or two young, or kids, after a gestation of about 150 days. They are able to run and jump vigorously soon after birth. Male goats, or billy goats, produce a pungent smell, which is particularly strong during the breeding season.

RAT

Rat

Originally from India, rats have travelled on ships and can now be found everywhere. They will eat practically anything: fruit, nuts, bread and waste products. This non fussy approach to food and ability to live practically anywhere has made the rat one of the most successful animals in the world.

Did you know

Rats can squeeze through gaps approximately one third of their size. A rat can lose the tip of its tail to escape from predators, but it will not re-grow.
