Train Driver

Department: Park Operations

Reports to: Park Operations Manager

Hours: Flexible with weekend working required

Key responsibilities: Drive the road train while delivering an informative script enhancing the guest experience at the park.

Relationships: Reporting to Park Operations Manager, Supporting other operational departments when needed.

Job Purpose

ZSEA (Zoological Society of East Anglia) is the charity which runs Banham Zoo and Africa Alive and is in an exciting period of change. Our mission is to connect communities to nature for conservation. To strengthen our commitment to conservation through collaborations, networking, and training activities to measurably improve local, national, and global biodiversity; To educate about nature, in nature, and for nature to foster engagement with the natural world; and to enable Africa Alive! And Banham Zoo to empower people to make positive changes in their lives and local communities by promoting the connections between nature and well-being.

Due to the seasonal nature of the business, the road train will need to run at maximum capacity during peak and the train driver will need to be available to work weekends, bank holidays and school holidays.

Responsibility for Resources

To undertake any other duties within your skills confidence to support the attainment of ZSEA’s key


  • Ensure continuous improvement of role and development of self
  • Seek to continuously improve the quality and value of outputs by working with key colleagues
  • Maintain awareness and knowledge of current offerings at sister park


Responsible for positively contributing to a safe work environment ensure compliance with H&S. Protect

all personal information in adherence with GDPR etc

  • Complete all mandatory Health and Safety training and any corporate refresher training where required
  • Comply with all site Health and Safety procedures
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation relating to the operation of the function

Main Duties and responsibilities

Responsible for driving the road train and giving a friendly, exciting, and informative guest experience delivering the pre prepared script.

  • To always drive the road train with care and attention, paying particular attention to pedestrians and children.
  • Ensure health and safety requirements are complied with.
  • Provide a commentary in accordance with the script in a friendly and informative manner.
  • Assist in plans to theme and upgrade the road train experience and script, making it your own.
  • To carry out required H&S checks to ensure the train is clean, safe to use and in good working order.
  • Report any damage or concerns to your manager.
  • Maintain high level of cleaning standards inside and out of the road train.
  • Follow end of shift procedures for close down of the road train and ensure keys are not left in the ignition unless the train is in operation.
  • During off peak season support operational departments with necessary tasks.

  • Communication – effective communication skills, meeting reasonable expectations and with reasonable adjustments made
  • Teamwork – ability to work effectively as part of a team, again, meeting reasonable expectations and with reasonable adjustments made
  • Organisation – ability to be always punctual for work and to plan, prepare and organise resources and time effectively
