The Zoological Society of East Anglia (ZSEA) is the dynamic conservation and education charity that leads Banham Zoo and Africa Alive. Join our ONE-TEAM in Hospitality, Retail and Guest Services at either Banham Zoo or Africa Alive. We are expecting a great staycation summer and are keen to recruit enthusiastic new colleagues for a variety of roles in the Zoos.

In Retail & Guest Services you will be part of a busy team who are the first-point contact welcoming our fabulous visitors and supporting them with services and enquiries.

In Hospitality you will be providing an excellent level of service in our restaurants, coffee shops and kiosks. You will need to demonstrate flexibility to be a cashier, cook, kitchen porter and catering assistant.

Join us in rebuilding our local economies and great days out in our wonderful zoos whilst supporting our charitable objectives in conservation, education and community.

Deputy Head of Living Collections

Based at Africa Alive but working across both zoos.

The Deputy Head of Living Collections will provide support with the consistent overall management of the animal collections and the team that manage them; to ensure the smooth operational function of Banham Zoo and Africa Alive.

About the role:

We have an exciting vacancy for a Deputy Head of Living Collections to join our team in a full time permanent role. The role is based at Africa Alive! but has responsibility across both zoos.

Main duties: 

  • Supporting the development and delivery of the ZSEA living collection plan, across Banham Zoo and Africa Alive, sourcing, and curating stock and developing the husbandry and breeding guidelines for the Charity in compliance with ZSEA Policies and Procedures.
  • To consistently achieve agreed standards and responsibilities and demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement/acquisition of job-related knowledge and skills.
  • To achieve results through effective self-management and teamwork. Ensuring actions of self and others appropriately reflect the visitor experience and fun nature of our business.
  • To adhere to and always ensure health and safety compliance and in line with current legislation and as set out in ZSEA Health and Safety policy and various operating procedures and protocols.
  • To support the Zoo Operations by providing cover and support as directed.
  • To support in the management of the Team Leaders of the animal collections, conduct their PDRs and ensure they are effectively managing their teams.

About you:

  • You will have a BSc in a relevant area or equivalent experience.
  • Have gained prior experience in managing and developing large teams.
  • Have an in depth knowledge of up-to-date animal husbandry practices in a zoological collection environment.
  • Have an understanding of Zoological licences.
  • You will have the ability to prioritise and be very well organised.
  • You will be a great communicator and be able to challenge ideas respectably.
  • Can demonstrates a consistent, collaborative, and respectful approach to management and building relationships with other teams.
  • You will respect confidentiality.
  • Have strong problem-solving skills and able to help others to resolve them.
  • Stay calm in difficult situations.
  • Be able to stay focused on tasks in hand.
  • Have the ability to listen and have empathy and understanding.
  • Be already playing an active role in the BIAZA and EAZA communities.

Construction & Maintenance Operative

About the role:

To assist with the construction, maintenance and repair work of buildings and other infrastructure within Banham Zoo to a high standard, ensuring a safe environment for visitors and staff.

Main duties:

  • Job Sheets – Carry out maintenance work – under supervision – as listed on the job sheet documentation. Accurately work to the job sheet issued, completing the works listed, on time and to the quality standards expected by the company.
  • Projects – Undertake work involved in the fabrication of new projects under the direction of your supervisor.
  • Customer Service – Ensure that high levels of service are consistently delivered to our customers (internal/external).
  • Health & Safety – Ensure all sites are free of debris and rubbish and comply with health & safety legislation. Ensure that you are familiar with all relevant risk assessments for your area of work. Comply with all statutory laws and regulations and wear/adhere to company personal protective equipment policies. Comply with all health & safety requirements as trained. Work in a safe manner at all times.  Report for action any faults or repairs identified, which require attention.
  • Equipment Maintenance – Ensure the machinery is kept in good order by means of daily inspections and regular maintenance/servicing. Ensure security of machinery at all times.
  • Punctuality – Ensure that you are punctual for work at all times. In the event that you are unable to attend work, please follow the company’s absence procedure as set out in your company handbook.
  • Teamwork – Support and assist colleagues to ensure efficient service is delivered. Ensure effective communication and cooperation with other departments. Actively participate in any training required for your role.
  • Always ensure and encourage the highest level of safety for public and colleagues, by operating in accordance with ZSEA’s Health & Safety Policy and Procedures.

About you:

  • Previous experience of working within a construction/maintenance role.
  • Good knowledge of carpentry and building maintenance skills
  • Be able to accurately delivery the quality of work required in the set timescales.
  • Have excellent communication skills (effective spoken, face to face and written skills).
  • Ability to work to set quality standards and operating procedures.
  • Clean full driving licence.

In return we offer:  Rates of pay as per the national living wage, working hours to be agreed weekly, a contributory pension, 28 days paid holiday including bank holidays (pro-rata).
