Habitat

All penguins are found in the southern hemisphere. Black-footed, or African penguins live around the coast of South Africa.

Diet

The black-footed penguin mainly feeds on pilchards as well as anchovies, squid and crustaceans. They are sometimes seen 20 miles out to sea.

behaviour

Breeding

Black-footed penguins usually nest in burrows dug in sand. They lay 1 to 2 eggs, which are incubated for 40 days by both parents.

Conservation

The black-footed penguin is endangered due to food shortages through overfishing, pollution, habitat loss and egg collection. All their nesting sites are now protected in the wild and there is also a reintroduction programme underway in South Africa. Our penguins are part of a European Breeding Programme for the species.
