Habitat

The East African, or grey-necked crowned crane, is found in open marshlands, wet plains and savannahs.

diet

Diet

Crowned cranes eat a wide variety of foods including insects, small reptiles and amphibians. They will also eat vegetable matter including berries, seeds, fruits and tender roots.

Breeding

Cranes are ground nesters and normally build bulky nests of vegetation. They lay 2 eggs, which are a pale blue colour with no markings.

This species is threatened in the wild by loss of wetlands and breeding areas, live trapping and egg collection.
