European Eagle Owl

Bubo bubo bubo

The European eagle owl is the largest owl with a wingspan of up to 2 metres. Their scientific name ‘Bubo’ refers to their call, which can be heard over very long distances.

Size: 60 - 74cm
Weight: 1.5 - 4.2kg

They often inhabit rocky landscapes and are also found in river valleys, open forest and grasslands.

They are the most powerful of all the eagle owls and are capable of killing young deer, foxes and large birds! However their usual prey is rodents.

Nests are usually built in rock crevices or on cliff ledges and they will also use abandoned nests of other large birds. 1 to 4 eggs are incubated for 35 days, almost entirely by the female.

European eagle owls are not endangered in the wild as their population is very large and has a very wide range.
