Madagascan Hissing Cockroach

Gromphadorhina portentosa

Madagascan hissing cockroaches are one of over 3,000 cockroach species, however unlike most cockroaches these have no wings.

Size: Up to 8cm
Weight: Around 10g

As their name suggests, these cockroaches are only found on the island of Madagascar where they live on the forest floor.

Cockroaches are the ‘dustmen of the forest floor’; they will eat anything from decaying fruit and vegetable matter to carrion (dead meat).

Madagascan hissing cockroaches have several litters of offspring each year. Cockroaches are ‘ovoviviparous’, the female retaining the egg sac inside her body until the young hatch.

Madagascan hissing cockroaches have not been evaluated by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), but they are not thought to be endangered.
