Maned Wolf

Chrysocyon brachyurus

The maned wolf is a member of the dog family. Despite resembling a fox and being called a wolf, it is actually neither and in a group of its own!

Size: Head-body length - 105cm, Tail length - 37cm
Weight: 23kg

The maned wolf is native to South America. Their natural habitat is grasslands, savannah and swampy areas. They have large territories, which are shared by a breeding pair.

They are omnivores (eat meat and plants), with a varied diet including small mammals, birds, insects and fruit. They stalk their prey and catch it with a high, swift pounce like a fox.

They are monogamous breeders (the same male and female breed for life), but are often solitary except for the breeding season. After a pregnancy of around 2 months, 2 to 4 pups are born in a hidden den and pups are born with a black coat.

Maned wolves are classed as ‘Near Threatened’, as the population has shown some decline due to the loss and fragmentation of their habitat. They are part of a European Breeding Programme to conserve numbers in captivity.
