Slender-tailed Meerkat

Suricata suricatta

The name ‘meerkat’ is a Dutch word meaning ‘lake cat’ even though it is not related to cats and is in fact a member of the mongoose family!

Size: Head-body length - 25-38cm, Tail length - 17-25cm
Weight: 620-969g

Meerkats are found in southern Africa, where they inhabit dry, open areas where the ground is often hard and stony.

Meerkats feed on insects, scorpions and spiders. They will also feed on small birds and mammals, eggs and vegetable matter.

Each family within the colony will contain a pair of adults and their young. Females can have 2 to 5 young after a pregnancy of about 11 weeks.

Slender-tailed meerkats are not believed to be endangered and their numbers are stable in the wild.
