Penguin Cove

We are very pleased to pass on the brilliant news that Avian Influenza Biosecurity restrictions have been lifted. This means that finally we can open the doors to Penguin Cove once again.

We know how much the penguins are loved by all our guests so please stop by and say hello to our wonderful colony who have been missing you!

Penguin Cove will be open from 9:30am – 4:30pm

Our award-winning walk-through enclosure is home to our group of black-footed penguins, as well as other birds such as hottentot teals, little egrets and African spoonbills. This recently renovated enclosure allows our guests to immerse themselves in the penguins’ habitat, getting that little bit closer to these intriguing birds whilst at the same time providing a substantially larger enclosure for them.

This enclosure incorporates part of the penguins’ old home and the pool is still very much a main feature. We have made improvements to the pool and have now added a shallow area which allows the birds to enter the pool in a more natural way.

As well as the pool and the pebbled area, there is a now a larger sand area with dunes and various grasses. Here we have the penguins’ nest caves which provide them with shelter as well as a place to nest and rear young.

A tunnel runs under the public board walk which allows the birds to move between the pool and sand areas.

The penguins themselves gave the enclosure a huge vote of approval, hatching their first chicks less than 3 months after moving in. The zoo is home to over 20 penguins – currently classified as an endangered species by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
