2019 – 2020 Key Stage 5 Programme

Our Further Education Sessions are based around 3 main themes; Zoo Animal Management, Business or Conservation, and are available in a number of specialist topics. If you would like a session tailored to meet a certain curriculum or syllabus, please contact the Education Team at education@banhamzoo.co.uk

Zoo Animal Management: Environmental Enrichment

In order to maintain an animal’s natural instincts and abilities they must be able to exhibit natural behaviours. This session will look at a variety of different forms of environmental enrichment and their use in the zoo.

Zoo Animal Management: Zoo Nutrition, Health And Zoonoses

Providing the correct nutrition for zoo animals is vital for their health and well-being. This session looks at the importance of good nutrition and how it is achieved, as well as vet checks, preventative medicine, correct storage of foods and prevention of zoonotic diseases.

Zoo Animal Management: Science In The Workplace

Animal keeping staff have a varied job role, which includes all the sciences to different degrees. During this session, we will look at the role of the zookeeper, how to get into this role and what it involves on a day to day basis. We will also look at the importance of health and safety in the role and who this affects.

Business: Marketing

Visitors are essential to Banham Zoo – and this session looks at the importance of marketing and what types of media we use in Banham Zoo.

Business: Careers

Find out about the world of work in this exciting and diverse setting – Whether your students want to work with animals, become chefs, manage teams or work in social networking, Banham Zoo is a great case study.

Business: There’s No Business Like Zoo Business

Banham Zoo is a place for the conservation and care of a variety of animals from around the world. However to allow us to do this, the zoo must operate successfully as a business. In this session we look at the history of the Zoo, our customers, marketing and job roles within the zoo.

Business: Health & Safety

Health & Safety is very important in the zoo – for the guests, the staff and the animals. This session will highlight risk assessment and minimizing risks, first aid, safety procedures, training, legislation and signage.

Conservation: Biodiversity, Conservation And The Role Of Zoos

Discover how Banham Zoo is working with other zoos help to protect habitats and ecosystems around the world.

How do breeding programmes work? How else can zoos contribute to conservation and what can we all do to help?

We encourage photographs to be taken as they make a wonderful addition to a child’s learning journey. Please ensure all relevant consent has been obtained.

Sessions last approximately 45 mins and can seat up to 30 people.

Sessions are charged at £25 and include an accompanying pack.
