At Banham Zoo, we’re proud to be playing a key role in International and European Breeding Programmes that safeguard the genetic health and future of endangered species.

From penguins to lemurs, our conservation work supports a wide range of species. With over 80 programmes across Banham Zoo and Africa Alive, we are committed to securing a thriving future for wildlife worldwide.

northern pool frogs

The Northern Pool Frog, once extinct in the UK, is being reintroduced through a long-term conservation programme led by ARC and Natural England.

ZSEA is now helping advance this work by establishing a breeding facility at Banham Zoo to rear frogs for future releases, supporting new populations and securing the species’ return to the UK.

Large Copper Butterfly

The Large Copper Butterfly, once native to Norfolk’s fenlands, was lost to the UK in the 19th century due to habitat loss.

ZSEA is now supporting a breeding and reintroduction programme at Banham Zoo, working in partnership with Natural England to help return this iconic species to the landscape. This project also supports wider efforts to restore fenland habitats and boost biodiversity across East Anglia.

The white-clawed crayfish is under threat of local extinction due to habitat loss, pollution, and invasive species. In partnership with Norfolk Rivers Trust, ZSEA has established a hatchery at Banham Zoo to breed and rear crayfish for release back into the wild, helping restore local populations and support long-term conservation of this native species.

Moonshiner Beetle and Field Wormwood

The Moonshiner Wormwood Beetle and its host plant, Field Wormwood, are both critically endangered. ZSEA is supporting conservation efforts at Banham Zoo by propagating Field Wormwood and exploring the development of a beetle breeding programme.

Tansy Beetle

ZSEA is supporting the conservation of the Tansy Beetle, a rare and declining species found in the UK.

Working alongside Natural England and the Tansy Beetle Action Group, efforts are focused on habitat restoration and captive rearing to boost wild populations.Further details will be announced as the initiative develops.

Conservation is a shared effort, and we can’t achieve our goals alone.
