Spring has well and truly sprung at Banham Zoo, and we’re so excited to welcome our 43 Chilean flamingos back outside! After spending time under cover to stay safe during bird flu restrictions in Norfolk, the flock is finally back in their outdoor home, and it’s safe to say they’re loving every second of it.
From the moment they stepped out, there was a mix of curiosity and excitement. A few cautious steps quickly turned into energetic “zoomies” as the flamingos stretched their legs, explored their space, and reconnected as a flock. Of course, Greg James, the flamingo who caught the attention of his BBC Radio 1 namesake, was right there in the middle of it all.
One of the loveliest moments has been their return to the pond. It started with a few toe-dips, but before long, the flock was happily wading, splashing, and settling back into their natural routines. Seeing them enjoy the water outside again has been a real highlight for the team.
Keeping the flamingos safely housed during the risk of avian influenza was an important step to protect their health, and we’re so pleased that all 43 birds stayed happy and healthy. Now, watching them thrive outdoors again makes it all the more worthwhile.
Even more exciting, we’re already spotting early signs of bonding between some pairs, so fingers crossed for a successful breeding season ahead! Visitors can once again enjoy these beautiful birds out in the fresh air, adding plenty of colour, character, and a true sense of spring to a day at Banham Zoo.
