Double Hatch Delight - Twix & Twirl
New at the Zoo
Two new critically endangered penguins have hatched at the Zoo
We’re thrilled to share some exciting news from Banham Zoo. We’ve welcomed not one, but two Black-footed penguin chicks this spring! Affectionately named Twix and Twirl, the pair hatched on the 28th and 29th of March 2026, bringing a wonderful boost to our conservation efforts.
Right now, the chicks are still in their very early stages, safely tucked away in their burrow. They only opened their eyes at the start of April and are completely reliant on their parents for warmth and food. It’s a crucial time for their development, and we’re pleased to see them growing stronger each day.
Their parents, Kanene and Smithson, have been doing a fantastic job. Kanene is one of our long-standing residents, while Smithson recently joined us from Birdworld in Surrey. Together, they’ve settled into parenthood brilliantly, and we’re delighted with the strong bond they’ve formed and the care they’re giving their chicks.
As Black-footed penguins are critically endangered, with fewer than 20,000 left in the wild, every successful hatch is incredibly important. We’re proud to support wider conservation work alongside organisations like SANCCOB, helping to protect this species for the future.
Although Twix and Twirl won’t be visible to visitors just yet, we’re looking forward to the day they begin to explore their habitat. For now, they’re exactly where they need to be, safe, warm, and thriving, and we can’t wait to share more updates as they grow.
